N95 8GB Software Update April 19, 2008

Just thought I would add a quick note that there is a software update (20.0.016 as in the screenshot above) available for all you N95 8GB users. You can save yourself the 5 KD or whatever is charged these days by downloading the Nokia Software Updater (free) and then connecting your phone.

For all you Mac-heads, this program only works on Windows — and due to the nature of the software do not try it with Parellels or VMWare; you will end up bricking (rendering it useless — like a brick) your device and then you’ll have to send it to your friendly repair center. Use bootcamp or ask your buddy that uses Windows.

The most significant change is the addition of Automatic Screen Rotate (ASR) as in the N82. The N95 comes with an accelerometer (as do most N-series devices now); which is primarily used to orient the camera — a quick test of this is if you have your camera app open, and you turn the phone upside down, the preview window doesn’t rotate :) There are other usages too of the tech; but mostly restricted to special use programs.

As with all major system upgrades (be it cellphone or otherwise), backup your device first. The update does not wipe out the 8GB external memory.

The update is a hefty 100 MB, so make sure you are on a broadband connection when you start. Once its downloaded, the actual upgrade process only takes about 10 minutes or so. Let me reiterate here that you will lose your contacts, messages, emails, settings, bookmarks and any installed applications. Everything that is not on the 8GB memory will be wiped clean.
